Antica Terra
Antica Terra
USA
Antica Terra is an 11-acre vineyard located on a rocky hillside in the Eola-Amity Hills AVA. The first vines were planted here in 1989 in a clearing within the oak savannah. The geology of the site is extremely unusual. In most of the region, vineyards are planted in the relatively deep, geologically young soils left behind by either the Missoula floods or the volcanic events that formed the Cascade Range. In this place, the remains of a far older pre-historic seabed rise to the surface, leaving the vines to struggle, without topsoil, amongst a fractured mixture of sandstone sown with fossilized oyster shells.

What we know now, after ten years of blending blin d, is that the way we see and experience the wines barrel by barrel is profoundly untypical. What at once seems confusingly disparate, slips into new combinations and is reflected back clearly only after hours and hours at the blending table. There was an a stonishing synthesis in certain chardonnay barrels in 2017 that called for its own bottling altogether. Aequorin and Obelin are the two photo proteins responsible for bioluminescence, the ability of a living thing to create its own light. The bioluminescen t are defined by light, speak in a language of light. This wine revealed itself to us through the obscurity of a blind tasting and seemed to demand a name that reflected the same. While not a permanent member of the family, this name will be reserved whene ver a wine, like this singular chardonnay, demands our attention with its luminosity.

It has an air of restraint from the first impression of crushed roses and violets with some sappy, fresh and attractive leaves and succulent plant notes and plenty of finely fragrant spices, cocoa, blueberry and dried dark cherry.

Fresh summer fruit of strawberries, raspberries and red cherries tend to be the identifying qualities, however richer versions express darker fruit including black cherries (kirsch), cherry cola, leather and violets to name a few.

Quite ripe smelling with rich cherry fruit and a lot of density. The fresh palate is very mouth watering, with lots of strawberry and cherry fruit. It's rich but not at all heavy and is very balanced due to the proper structure and fine but clearly present tannin. Long, impressive finish
