Sami-Odi
Australia
A small winery, that goes by the curious name of Sami-Odi, producing minuscule quantities of syrah of the highest order. Grapes are vinifies separately from selected plots of Barossa Valley’s finest vineyards to create a cuvee with combined strengths. The 'Baby Tui' is procured entirely from three treasured plots within the Hoffmann families 'Dallwitz' vineyard, adjacent to the Eben-Ezer/Walla Walla centenary stone. Each of these blocks are propagated from original Hoffmann cuttings and were planted on their own roots in 1995, 1996 & the oldest vines that were planted prior to family records being established in 1912.

Perfume is all pot pourri, dried cranberry, black olive, old spice cupboard and smoky paprika. Flavours similar, tannin chewy, grippy, well done. Grunty in a way, complex as all get out. An assertive expression, bolder than some years in its intensity and drive, but not without the hallmarks of great Sami Odi wines.

Lovely spice notes in the bouquet, clove, pepper, cedary notes, old leather, tobacco, then dark fruits, anise, plums. Lots going on between brooding fruit and savoriness. Tight tannins and crisp acidity keep the wine in check. It’s juicy, but crunchy-textured, very long in flavor, spicy, moody with blue and black berry fruit feel. It’s got a lot more structure than previous incarnations.

A suppleness up front in the palate, that soothing swish of dark fruit, cool acidity, then light peppery spice weaves its way in and there’s the detail… earth, mineral, elemental things, and a shuffle of ultra-fine, high class threads of velour tannin.
