DOMAINE BACHELET-MONNOT
DOMAINE BACHELET-MONNOT
France
In 2005, Marc and Alex Bachelet created Domaine Bachelet-Monnot from the union of the vineyards held by their father and their uncle Monnot. Given the combination of exceptional vineyards, an excellent vintage, and the brothers’ attention to detail in the vines and in the cellar, the first release of the domaine’s Puligny wines garnered immediate recognition, locally as well as internationally. “While the obvious collectibles in the portfolio are the Bâtard, Folatières and Referts, readers shouldn't neglect the terrific quality for a modest tariff offered by the domaine's Maranges and Santenay bottlings. The hearty reds from these appellations often bolstered négociant blends from grander appellations in days gone by, and the Bachelet brothers' judicious winemaking brings out all their neglected potential.” -- William Kelley

Pale yellow. Aromatic nose combines lemon, lime, peach and honey. Supple, ripe, sweet and nicely concentrated, and already quite expressive. Finishes with noteworthy length for village wine. The Folatieres came across as less opulent but more penetrating, floral and scented, and very long on the aftertaste.

Full, bright yellow. Penetrating, slightly candied aromas of lemon, lime, flowers, spices and stone. At once rich and precise, with terrific sappy material. Strong crushed stone character throughout. This juicy, floral, very fine-grained wine should be taste early but also evolve slowly.

The 2018 Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru comes from vines just a handful of meters down from Montrachet. It sees no new oak and is aged instead in one- and two-year-old 350-liter barrels. This prudent policy allows the terroir to really shine through with gorgeous Granny Smith apple, apricot blossom and limestone-like aromas. The palate is very well balanced yet very subtle, perhaps more bashful than the Folatières and Referts at the moment. But you can feel the persistence on the finish. A Bâtard-Montrachet that deserves four or five years in bottle to show what it can do.

The 2017 Bourgogne Blanc offers up aromas of lemon oil, pastry cream, crisp green apple and beeswax, followed by a medium-bodied, succulent and open-knit palate, concluding with a delicately chalky finish. It's a good introduction to the domaine's wines.
